The corona virus has put the entire world under lock-down, let us see how an aging population could cope up with this devastating pandemic.
It is important to understand people of all ages can be infected by the Corona virus. The Elderly population appears to be more defenseless to the virus comparatively. The World Health Organization has stated maintaining good hand and respiratory hygiene can combat the deadly virus.
USA death trolled up to 1891 yesterday (19th of April 2020). Let us analyze the USA’s aging population in a nutshell.
The number of older people in the United States is growing remarkably. In 1980, there were 25.5 million Americans age sixty-five or older; and that number is expected to double over the next twenty-five years. Americans who are seventy-five and older, in 1980, were close to 10 million; by 2002 they were more than 18 million. Of those age eighty-fives and above were 2.2 million in 1980, compared to more than 5 million today. Projections are that by the year 2050, there will be nearly 87 million Americans age sixty-five and older and close to 21 million Americans age eighty-five and over.
Not just the number of elderly has increased but also their proportion of the total US population. This is especially true for those in the older-old and the old-old age groups.
Those of age seventy-five and above are projected to rise from 4.4 percent in 1980 to 6.1 percent in 2010, while the proportion of Americans age eighty-five and older is projected to rise from 1.0 percent to 2.0 percent over those same years.

It is our obligation to take care of our parents during these pandemic times. I would request to the entire world including my home Sri Lanka to look after your parents with love and care. Share your ideas in the comment section on how we can improve the mental and physical health of the elders during these tough times.
